AN INDEPENDENT study will look at whether the number of councillors in Bradford could be cut.
Bradford Council's Labour leaders are to set up an independent commission to review the role of councillors and the numbers required.
The authority's Conservative opposition had suggested slashing the number of councillors from 90 to 75 to save money.
Deputy Conservative leader Councillor Simon Cooke said the move would save about £250,000 a year.
But Council leader David Green said choosing an arbitrary number of councillors would be "putting the cart before the horse", and the commission could properly investigate how many were needed.
Cllr Green said the commission could also look at another of the Tories' suggestions, which is to hold local elections once every four years, instead of the existing arrangement of three years out of every four.
Cllr Green said he was "neutral" on the idea, adding: "It would clearly save some money.
"I think it has the chance to give a better, more stable council but possibly involves the loss of some of that more instant democracy."
