A PLANE made an emergency landing at Leeds Bradford Airport today after reports of smoke in the cabin.

The Jet 2 flight from Newcastle to Prague land safely after diverting to LBA and the passengers were all unharmed.

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service launched a large scale emergency response, sending 13 engines to the scene.

A fire service spokesman said: "We were called at 10.48am yesterday to Leeds Bradford Airport to reports that a Boeing 737 with a technical issue was awaiting to land.

"West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service sent 13 engines to the scene which included specialist support vehicles. These appliances came from Rawdon, Cookridge, Idle, Stanningley, Shipley, Bradford, Cleckheaton, Batley, Mirfield, Moortown and Pontefract stations.

"By 11.30am the aeroplane had landed safely. There was no fire on board the plane."

Initial reports said there was smoke in the cabin, believed to be from over-heated brakes. The flight was over the North Sea when it diverted to Leeds Bradford.

Passengers were transferred to another plane to continue their journey to Prague.

A spokesperson for Jet2 said: "Flight LS509 from Newcastle to Prague diverted to Leeds Bradford Airport this morning as a precautionary measure due to an operational issue. We apologise to our customers for the delay to the start of their holiday but their safety is of paramount importance to us."
