A BRADFORD rape suspect was threatened by a fellow prisoner while he was held on remand after revealing details of his behaviour with an alleged victim in a hotel room, a jury was told.

Nathan Campbell, 24, of Great Horton, was threatened after revealing the woman involved had been video recorded on his telephone and after giving details of his sexual activity with her.

Campbell was on remand at Marshgate prison in Doncaster ahead of his trial at Doncaster Crown Court when he told prisoner Thomas Wigham about the reason he was locked up.

Giving evidence, Wigham said Campbell claimed he had been out drinking with “mates” and the girl and he had also taken cocaine on the night of the encounter, in a Leeds hotel.

Campbell claimed to be a £2,000 a week professional footballer, but the jury has previously been told that is not the case.

Wigham told the hearing: “He said he had videoed it on his phone, what went off in the room.

“I wasn’t very pleased, I have kids. It is not a nice thing, I thought he was a wrong ‘un. I told him 'I will smash your face in’.”

Campbell was later moved for his own safety after Wigham told the prison authorities Campbell had been talking about the offence. He had previously declined an offer to be housed on a prison wing offering increased protection.

In a police statement, Wigham had referred to Campbell’s claim to be a footballer and said the defendant had explained the video saying: “We all do it and pass it around to show each other. You will not believe what lasses will do for 15 minutes of fame.”

Campbell and Simon Lenighan, who was a footballer with Leeds United at the time of the offence are both accused of three counts of rape and one of attempting to pervert the course of justice, they deny the charges.

The trial continues.
