AN ELDERLY man was rescued this evening from his smoke-logged flat in Bradford by firefighters who broke in after being alerted by neighbours.

Smoke alarms inside the flat had been triggered by fumes from a pan which had been accidentally left on the cooker at the first-floor flat, in Mitchell Square.

The occupant didn’t hear it, but neighbours did and called firefighters who broke into the flat and rescued the occupant, who was suffering from inhaling fumes.

He was given oxygen by firefighters from the Bradford station before being left in the care of paramedics, who took him to Bradford Royal Infirmary for health checks.

He had been worried about his cat, which had also been in the flat, but that was found by firefighters and was unharmed.

The incident happened at around 5pm and the flat was filled with smoke, but damage was restricted to the pan on the cooker.

A West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “It wasn’t the resident who heard the alarm, but his neighbours and they did a great job in contacting us. It helped to save him.”
