A LORRY driver who was involved in a four-vehicle smash which killed a woman on the M606 near Bradford has appeared in court.

Edvard Musik, 46, of Compton Road, Leicester, is charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

He was driving a Mercedes Actros articulated lorry along the motorway when the incident happened.

Angela Knight, 47, from Lymm in Cheshire, died after her car was involved in a collision with two lorries and another car just before junction three at the Staygate Roundabout, on the northbound carriageway on October 7 this year.

The incident left a total of three people injured.

Musik appeared yesterday at Bradford and Keighley Magistrates' Court for his first hearing and was told his case will next be heard at Bradford Crown Court on Tuesday, January 13.

Musik, of stocky build with a short, shaved hairstyle, attended the five-minute hearing and was wearing a grey leather jacket, navy blue and white patterned jumper, with black trousers and black shoes.

An indication of a not guilty plea was also given during the hearing.

Musik, who appeared alongside a Russian interpreter, only spoke to confirm his name and address at yesterday's hearing.

No representatives from his Kent-based solicitors attended.

Charles MacCrae, prosecuting, told the court Musik was to be placed on conditional bail that he must not drive any vehicle in the UK.

District Judge Susan Bouch warned Musik: "A charge with this offence must be tried in Crown Court.

"You are on conditional bail.

"The condition is for you not to drive any vehicle in the UK.

"If you fail to comply to that condition, the police have the power to arrest you and bring you to court."

A 60-year-old Bradford man in another car, said at the time of the crash to be a Peugeot, was taken to Leeds General Infirmary with serious, but non-life threatening, injuries.

Screens were put up to block off that section of the northbound carriageway as police and emergency services carried out investigations. The crash took place just after 2pm. The road did not reopen until 9pm.

Traffic was diverted via Staithgate Lane, with northbound congestion into Bradford backing up to Chain Bar on the M62 and beyond.

Stationary traffic was eased when the southbound carriageway reopened after 5pm.
