A GROUP that wants Yorkshire’s own parliament is holding a conference on Saturday – with the brother of a former Labour Home Secretary as a guest speaker.
Yorkshire First, which was formed in April to fight the European Parliament elections, is beginning to gear itself up for next year’s elections and activists will come together in Leeds to set out a programme for next May.
Leader Richard Carter said: “Devolution is firmly on the agenda. However what’s being offered by the three main parties is second rate powers: limited in their scope, divisive and undemocratic.
“We want Yorkshire to have first rate devolution – similar to Scotland and Wales. After all we have a similar population to Scotland and an economy twice that of Wales.”
One of the speakers will be Ed Straw – brother of Jack. He said: “People want successful delivery in this post-ideological age – a different kind of politics, real involvement and engagement in decision-making, and real accountability.
“I am excited with many of the things Yorkshire First are doing.”
The conference is at Leeds Beckett University, November 22, from 10am to 4pm.
