Bradford's unsung heroes of education got their moment in the spotlight at Bradford's inaugural School Awards earlier this year.

More than 300 people from schools and educational facili-ties across the district attended the event at Aagrah Midpoint.

They were organised by the T&A in partnership with the University of Bradford and Bradford Council, and conceived as a way of shining a light on the successes of schools, staff and pupils that are not always obvious from league tables.

An invitation for nominations was made in the T&A late last year, and hundreds of people from across the district wrote in to nominate teachers, support staff and students who they felt deserved more recognition of their devotion to improve their schools - nursery, primary and secondary.

As well as awards for teachers and staff, schools were honoured for categories such as community involvement, sci-ence and technology and improvement.

Speaking at the 2014 awards, T&A editor Perry Austin-Clarke said: "Tonight is all about shining a light on the many and varied achievements of the people who work at all levels in our schools.

"It's about recognising the astonishing effort that goes into improving results while responding to and coping with the never-ending hailstorm of change.

"It's about telling tales of cre-ativity, innovation, inventive-ness, caring, as well as sheer hard work, passion and deter-mination.

"Above all, it's about saying 'thank you' to those who battle challenging odds every day to deliver the best possible education for our children, often at unacknowledged personal cost."
