MEMBERS of the University of Bradford's Archery Club have targeted funds for the Telegraph & Argus Crocus Cancer Appeal by holding a 24-hour non-stop shooting marathon.

A hardy group of up to 25 club members will brave the wintry weather at the Richmond Road campus as they aim to raise cash.

The challenge starts at 11am on Monday, December 1 and runs until 11am on Tuesday, December 2. It will take place at the multi-use games area on campus.

Club members have not got a specific target in mind, but they are looking to raise as much cash as they can.

The £1 million Crocus Appeal - a joint fundraiser by the T&A, The University of Bradford, Yorkshire Cancer Research and the Sovereign Health Care Charitable Trust.

The appeal aims to raise enough money to buy a new machine for use by researchers at the university's Institute of Cancer Therapeutics to help the city's ground-breaking work to fight the disease.

The shooting marathon is the latest event they are taking part in to raise cash for the Crocus Appeal, after club members took to the streets of Bradford for the City Runs event last month.

Freya Leask, 21, president of the University of Bradford's Archery Club, who is studying a masters in chemistry at Bradford, says club members are looking forward to the fundraising task.

She said: "The shooting will take place outdoors, whatever the weather.

"Archery does not stop for rain or snow.

"This is a good way for the club to come together. A few are looking to raise personal bests.

"There may be some rivalries that come out between members but it's just a way for us to just raise money for a good cause.

"We're hoping to get 20 to 25 club members taking part. It will be a whole group effort, with people supervising and organising too.

"Those who are taking part range from new beginners who just joined the club in September to people who have been with us for a few years.

"Everyone seems really enthusiastic about it. We are just starting our season in the North England Universities Archery League, so it will be good practice for us as well.

"It's great to support a local charity like the Crocus Appeal. It's really exciting for some of our members who are now students to be raising money for something that they might use in their work afterwards.

"The Crocus Appeal is something that the students of the University of Bradford have really go behind, and we are confident we can reach the £1 million target this year."
