THE Bradford City Runs event has raised more than £10,000 to fund cutting-edge work in the fight against cancer.
More than 1,000 runners young and old joined one of four courses in the city - a children's race, a 5km, a 10km and a half marathon.
Forty per cent of the race fees went to the Telegraph & Argus Crocus Cancer Appeal, raising more than £5,000, while 138 runners were also collecting sponsorship for the fundraiser.
The Crocus Appeal - led by the T&A, The University of Bradford, Yorkshire Cancer Research and Sovereign Health Care Charitable Trust - aims to raise £1 million towards making the city's ground-breaking work to fight the disease faster than ever before.
The money will be used to buy vital equipment for the University of Bradford's Institute of Cancer Therapeutics.
Davide Calogero, head of development and alumni relations at the university, said: "Bradford City Runs was a great success with over £10,000 raised for the Bradford Crocus Cancer Appeal.
"On behalf of the partners involved in the appeal I’d like to thank everyone who took part in the race, as well as all the volunteers and supporters who were there on the day.
"As a participant myself, it was fantastic to see so many people running for the appeal and wearing purple.
"The money raised takes us one step closing in helping us to reach our target of £1 million to help the University of Bradford scientists discover new and more advanced treatments for those suffering with cancer."
Among the runners collecting sponsorship money for the Crocus Appeal were a team from the Telegraph & Argus, who raised more than £2,000.
Telegraph & Argus deputy editor Damian Holmes said: "The money raised through the Bradford City Runs is a huge boost to the appeal and everyone who took part should feel rightly proud of themselves.
"I'd like to say a special thank you to anyone who chose to run specifically for the Crocus Appeal, including the team from the T&A, who put in a fantastic effort."
A team of eight from Applebys Solicitors in Bradford also ran the 5km run for the Crocus Appeal, raising £2,196.
One of those taking part was Amin Ullah, the principal of Applebys.
He said: "This was such a fantastic effort from the firm and I’m really proud that we were able to raise so much money for such a deserving charity.
"The total of £2,196 included my doubling the sum staff had raised via sponsorship and adding an additional £30 from the firm for each of the three staff members who completed the course in 30 minutes or less.
"Once again well done to everyone who took part."
Bradford City Runs were organised by Bradford Council and Bradford Athletics Network.
