Two former racing greyhounds that were saved from being destroyed now need a new home, after their trainer handed them in to a Bradford dog centre.

The dogs, one black, one white, were retired from racing after sustaining leg injuries.

Usually in those circumstances dogs are put down but the K9 rehoming rescue centre in Ned Lane, Holme Wood, Bradford, received the three-year-old animals three weeks ago.

Urfan Ashraf and Helena Bentley have run the centre since November 2002 and can care for up to 25 dogs and four puppies.

Mr Ashraf said: "They are fully recovered from their injuries and are now fit and healthy, they've had all their injections and would make fine pets.

"My first dog was a former racing greyhound and they are excellent family dogs but they can't be kept with cats or rabbits."

He said splitting the dogs up would not be a problem as they were trained separately and ran in different races.

Miss Bentley said: "It can be harder to find homes for greyhounds because of the size of them. People are often put off former racing dogs, thinking they need loads of exercise but that's not true, they are quite happy to curl up and sleep like any other dog."

The centre, which has two other part-time staff, operates entirely on adoption fees paid for by people who rehome their dogs.
