A sister of a man accused of murdering a Keighley taxi driver has told a jury that she identified her brother on closed circuit television.

Father-of-six Mahmood Ahmed was stabbed in the chest and struck eight times on the head with a hammer after he went to pick up a late-night fare outside the Merry Melon flower shop in Keighley on April 24.

Michael Metcalfe, 46, is accused of killing the 36-year-old and his sister Christine Heckles yesterday told the trial at Bradford Crown Court that her brother had been staying with her at her flat Parkwood Rise in Keighley at the time of the incident.

Mrs Heckles said that after Metcalfe was arrested she was shown CCTV footage by the police of her brother leaving the block of flats earlier that day.

Mrs Heckles, who described her brother as "a brilliant lodger" said that he was wearing her blue fleece coat in the images.

Simon Myerson QC prosecuting has told the jury that fibres found in Mr Ahmed's abandoned taxi exactly matched the fleece.

Mrs Heckles said that she was "shocked" because he never took anything without asking and added that the last time she used a taxi was about two years ago.

The trial at Bradford Crown Court has been told that various items including, including a knife, a hammer and a brown leather jacket were all recovered from the River Worth in the days after the killing.

Giving evidence Mrs Heckles said that Metcalfe, who denies murder, had shown her a brown leather jacket which he said he had got out of the back of skip wagon.

The knife that was recovered, Mrs Heckles told the jury, belonged to her late husband. But she added that she had not noticed the knife or anything else missing from her flat.

When Metcalfe was arrested Mrs Heckles was shown CCTV footage of man standing outside the Merry Melon.

Mrs Heckles said that she could not identify the person in the shots but another witness said that it Michael Metcalfe.

Shop manager Gayle Foster told the jury that she recognised Metcalfe whom she has known for 20 years.

The trial continues.
