The terrible weather once again took its toll on the local football scene and one of the only matches to beat the conditions was the Telegraph & Argus League Premier Division clash between White Horse and Gateway Trinity.

The match was played in terrible conditions at Cathedral College and remained goalless at half-time, with both teams struggling to come to terms with the bad conditions.

Goalkeeper Stewart Green was in fine form for the visitors and kept the hosts' forwards at bay. Defender Damian Preston was also in good form.

With midfielder and man of the match Nicholas Barker in outstanding form, Gateway got on top at the start of the second half and after 50 minutes Adam Holt forced home a scrappy goal from inside the six-yard box. Seven minutes later Chris Fawcett fired home from 20 yards to double the visitor's lead.

White Horse began to pressure the Gateway goal but Barker marshalled the defence superbly.

The breakthrough finally came in the 70th minute when Theodoro Pedro hit home an angled shot from the edge of the six-yard area.

The victory moves Gateway up the league, leapfrogging their opponents to put some leeway between themselves and the bottom of the table.

Ravenscliffe remain in pole position at the moment but they have played more matches than their immediate rivals and have to play most of the top teams again.

IMS Celtic have still to drop a point in league matches this season and, like Ravenscliffe, have to play all the teams in the top half of the table.

East Bowling remain in a challenging position in third place but have played more matches than their immediate rivals.

Last season's champions West Horton have still to be beaten in the league this season but they were surprisingly knocked out of the Knockout Cup on penalties in the last round and the league is their only chance of collecting silverware this season.
