A school gardening club who help to keep Haworth in bloom have been nominated as some of Bradford's most valuable youngsters.

Haworth Primary School Gardening Club has been nominated for an Active Citizenship Award and a Healthy Lifestyle Award in the 2007 Bradford Young Citizen Awards.

The awards, which have been set up by Bradford Council in association with the Telegraph & Argus, aim to celebrate the achievement and positive contributions youngsters make to the Bradford district.

The gardening club was formed in 2002 to encourage children to grow plants at a young age so they might respect things in their community when they become teenagers.

The children, which started off by planting flower beds and hanging baskets near the school to help make it a brighter and happier place to work in and visit, soon realised the positive impact it was having on the community.

Now they plant up the police contact point, fire station, railway station and manages the cenotaph along with many other community based projects.

Although the deadline for nomination forms, was Monday, the Council will accept nominations to the end of next week.

The six categories are: the Healthy Lifestyles Award; Tackling Bullying Award; Participation for Success; Active Citizenship Award; the Outstanding Achievement Award and the Enterprise and Aspiration Award.

Forms are available from Philip Kitson, Room 202, City Hall, Bradford. E-mail philip.kitson@bradford.gov.uk or telephone (01274) 431933.
