A Bradford lorry driver's life "seemed to fall apart" after he was falsely imprisoned in a Greek jail, an inquest heard.

David Wilson was arrested in 2003 after 19 illegal immigrants were found inside his 50ft articulated lorry as he waited to board a ferry bound for Italy.

He spent ten weeks in a Greek jail, before finally being bailed and allowed to return to this country. He returned to Greece in 2004 and successfully cleared his name.

His vehicle had been impounded and by the time it was released it was virtually a wreck. His business folded and he later separated from Tracey, his wife of 27 years.

On November 20 last year, the 47-year-old was found hanged from the banister of his mother's home in Salt Horn Close, Oakenshaw.

In a statement read to the hearing, Mrs Nancy Wilson said her son's life seemed to fall apart as a result of his Greek ordeal.

He separated from his wife and had formed a relationship with a woman called Sandra, but about two months before his death he was "very down."

The night before he died, he had returned from the pub and spoke with her before going to bed. When she got up the next morning she noticed his bedroom light was still on and somehow knew he had not gone to work.

"I saw his head on the steps - he was sat about four stairs down," said Mrs Wilson. She asked him what he was doing there and then noticed a ligature around his neck.

In her statement, Tracey Wilson said she and her husband had a good life until his arrest in Greece.

When he returned from there he was not the same man and in June 2005 he told her he was leaving. By September, he was wanting to come back, but she felt it was too soon.

Coroner Roger Whittaker recorded a verdict that Mr Wilson took his own life.
