GOOD causes in Bradford are celebrating after being given a share of nearly £100,000 by Children in Need.

The cash will be split between a Down Syndrome support group in Bingley and three projects working with disadvantaged young people in Bradford.

The biggest grant, of £74,997, is being given to the Edge Project, a youth project on Bradford's Holme Wood Estate.

It will use the cash to organise a mixture of support sessions and activities for disadvantaged young people.

Senior youth worker Adam Woodhouse said: “It's really amazing because I had been trying to get Children in Need funding for three years and when I got the letter I didn't know what to say. It is like the project has gone from nothing to now having five members of staff."

Horton Park Primary School, in Bradford, is being awarded £9,980 to put on school holiday activities for young people from the Canterbury Estate in Bradford.

A total of £6,540 is being donated to Bingley-based Down Syndrome Support Group, which works with families from all over the district and beyond.

The group, which runs youth clubs, training and advice courses and other activities, will use the cash to continue its popular fortnightly sessions for the families of children aged 10 months to six years.

Early years practitioner Isabel Hogan said the sessions developed the children's communication skills and gave much-needed support and advice to parents.

She said: "We provide an essential lifeline. They have so many questions, and there is so little out there in terms of information and support.

"We are enormously grateful for the funding we have got, because without it there would be no group. There would be 25 to 30 children, and their families, who would not have this support."

BBC Children in Need now supports 25 projects in Bradford, worth a total of £1,289,864.

Elizabeth Myers, the charity's regional manager for the north, said they were delighted to award this latest funding.

She said: "These grants are only made possible thanks to the incredible support we get from fundraisers each year.

"Organisations working with children and young people in Bradford who would like to apply for funding in future rounds should visit the grants section on our website to find out more about our grant programmes."
