Motorists and riders are being warned to take extra care on the roads as severe weather conditions including winds of up to 80mph are predicted in the Bradford area.

The Met Office has predicted much of the country will be affected by severe gales tomorrow followed by a change to much colder weather over the weekend and into next week.

Gusts of up to 80 miles per hour, accompanied by heavy rain at times, are expected on exposed sections of road and drivers of high-sided vehicles and motorcyclists are advised to take extra care.

Next week, widespread frosts and a risk of snow over northern and eastern parts of the country may cause further problems for drivers.

The Highways Agency, which manages and operates motorways and many A roads in England, advised all road users, including motorcyclists and drivers of high-sided vehicles, to take extra care on the roads and to plan their journeys.

Rain and spray reduces visibility and more than doubles the distance to stop.

Drivers are advised to use headlights and keep well back from the vehicle in front.

Water on the road can reduce tyre grip and makes steering unresponsive.

Drivers should ease off the accelerator and slow down gradually.

Maintenance teams will be gritting in advance of the cold weather, and will continue to treat motorways and other strategic roads throughout the cold snap.
