A town's deputy mayor has resigned after a bust-up with the mayor.

Councillor David Petyt had been widely expected to succeed Coun Graham Mitchell as Mayor of Keighley.

But in a stinging resignation letter to Coun Mitchell and Keighley Town Council clerk Miggy Bailey, Mr Petyt cited a lack of trust, and said: "When one is kicked by one's own team, then I think it is time to leave the field."

Neither party was willing to disclose the source of the disputes, which remain shrouded in mystery.

Mr Petyt becomes the second town councillor to leave this month following the departure of Angela Clarke.

Mr Petyt, of Goose Cote Lane, Oakworth, said: "We disagreed about my actions."

Coun Mitchell said he regretted the departure of Mr Petyt but was forced to accept it under local government legislation.
