A 19-year-old Nigerian man is due to appear in court today after more than five kilos of cocaine were found in his luggage by customs officers at Leeds-Bradford Airport.
Marc Anthony Kennedy Opia, who was travelling from Nigeria via Amsterdam, was arrested on Monday and charged yesterday with offences including being knowingly concerned with the importation of an illegal or controlled substance.
David Odd, head of investigation at HM Revenue and Customs, said: "The removal of more than five kilos of the class A drug cocaine from the criminal supply chain shows our commitment to reduce the availability of harmful drugs on the streets of West Yorkshire.
"In line with the UK Government's drugs strategy, we work with our partners at home and abroad to reduce the availability of Class A drugs, while continuing to detect and prosecute smugglers of other illegal drugs such as cannabis."
Mr Odd urged anyone with information about drug smuggling to come forward by calling free phone 0800 59 5000.
