A charity fun run that was set up in memory of murdered Bradford PC Sharon Beshenivsky is to become an annual event.

The announcement was made last night as organisers handed over a cheque for £10,525 to the West Yorkshire Police Authority which will enter it into a trust fund for PC Beshenivsky's family.

About 500 people turned out for the first run last May.

PC Beshenivsky's colleagues and senior officers were among those who took part in the five-kilometre run around Bingley.

Organiser Zaff Shah said: "When I first decided on organising the Beshenivsky 5k I knew that the community of Bradford would stand shoulder-to-shoulder and show how united we stand when faced with adverse events.

"This meant that there had to be a partnership working for this to succeed and remain sustainable.

"Partnerships within communities are something Bradford has a long history in and it is something we as Bradfordians can be proud of."

This year's event will be in memory of Colin Cramphorn, the former West Yorkshire Chief Constable who died last November.

Mr Shah said: "Sadly, last year we had to contend with another loss and that was our Chief Constable Colin Cramphorn who had even through his illness attended the fun run to offer his support and for that I am very grateful.

"He truly was an inspiration."

Mr Shah added: "The Beshenivsky name will remain, but this year we would like to run it in memory of Colin Cramphorn who we all know died of cancer.

"This is an illness that has the potential of affecting all of us.

"All the proceeds for this year's run will go to Marie Curie which is a charity that cares for patients who suffer from cancer, a charity that I hold close to my heart.

"Marie Curie provided excellent care for my brother who sadly died of cancer two years ago."

The cheque was handed over to Bradford South Divisional Commander, Chief Superintendent Sarah Brown, at Cannons Health Club, in Cottingley, which helped organise the event.

Cannons' manager Steve Bulled said: "We are extremely pleased to be involved.

"It is a fantastic cause, not only for the family of Sharon Beshenivsky, but also in the way that it brings the community together."

PC Beshenivsky, 38, of Hainworth, near Keighley, a married mum of three children and two step-children, was shot dead during a robbery at a travel agency in Morley Street, Bradford, on November 18, 2005.
