Students will be sitting down to a game of volleyball to support the Telegraph & Argus Crocus Cancer Appeal.

The University of Bradford Volleyball Club is holding the sitting volleyball tournament next month to help towards our £1 million fundraising target.

Since the 2012 London Paralympics, the game has become one of the most popular Paralympic sports amongst both able-bodied and disabled participants.

Katie Lomas, president of the University of Bradford Volleyball Club, said: “Sitting volleyball is a version of the sport that caters to all abilities. It means even if you have never played volleyball before you can join in! It also raises awareness of the sport’s ability to cater to all needs.”

Participants who work up an appetite during the tournament can make use of a bake sale or enjoy food, provided by The Westleigh Hotel, after the event. There will also be cheerleading and dance routines as well as a ‘Fastest Spike Challenge’ to keep participants entertained throughout the day.

The competition will be held on Sunday, April 6, at Trinity Sports Hall, Bradford College, from 1pm until 5pm.

The cost of entry is £2 per person with a minimum of six players per team. To request a sign-up form or for more information email katie.lomas1993@hotmail.co.uk.

The Bradford Crocus Cancer Appeal is run by the University of Bradford, Yorkshire Cancer Research, the Telegraph & Argus and the Sovereign Healthcare Charitable Trust.

It aims to improve the number of opportunities for the discovery and development of new cancer medicines by raising £1 million for researchers at the university’s Institute of Cancer Therapeutics.

l Meanwhile, the university’s Hockey Club has raised £382 by completing the gruelling Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge.

Nineteen members of the Hockey Club took part in the challenge.

Development Officer, Rachel Gunston, said: “The Crocus Appeal is one of the charities the university is fully supporting for RAG (Raise and Give) and have Team Bradford backing it all the way.”
