It will be a new year and a new band in 2014, when new ‘Americano pop’ band DownReno bring their happy vibe to Saltaire next month.

The band’s members are no strangers to “get up and dance” music fans in the Bradford district, but have shaken off ties with past bands to create a new line-up, with Jez Barraclough on lead vocal and acoustic guitar, Craig Bussey on electric/acoustic guitar, Cam Greenwood on drums and Ricky Silvers on double bass.

They will be at the Liveroom at Saltaire’s Caroline Street Working Men’s Club on Sunday, January 12 – a longed-for gig that has finally come round, says Jez.

Live Room promoter Ron Dukelow says that with other Bradford band Wilful Missing on stage as well, it’s going to be “a terrific double-header”.

Wilful Missing are a five-piece band, whose music has been played by DJs Steve Lamacq and Tom Robinson on Radio 2 and 6Music, and they have performed several live sessions for BBC Radio Leeds and four of their songs have been featured in TV shows Waterloo Road and Hollyoaks.

Ron adds: “We pride ourselves on our ability to bring the very best folk and roots artists from around the globe to the Live Room, but on that night we’ll prove we also have some brilliant musicians and songwriters right here on our doorstep.

“We have two Bradford-based bands, featuring nine wonderful musicians between them that can grace any stage, in a terrific double-header.”

“DownReno are an amazing mixture of magic, with a smidge of skiffle, folk, Americana, cheek and some seriously driving tunes,” he said.

Jez is just as excited about the Liveroom gig. He says: “We’ve been waiting for this one – it’s the big one and we’re very, very happy!”

All DownReno’s songs are self-penned and draw on life’s experiences but veer away from the four-lettered world – love.

“Love’s too easy to get things to rhyme with, it’s not challenging enough. I’d say our lyrics can be deep. They’re sweet and sour,” says Jez.

“People know us. They know we can play. In fact, they know we’ll be brilliant at what we do. We’ve grown up from what we’ve done before. They have had a taste and now they can have more. We are broadening our horizons.”

With the band’s name snatched from a line in Johnny Cash’s Folsom Prison Blues, DownReno is getting set for a busy year ahead, with plans to get crowds up and jumping at pubs, clubs and festivals throughout 2014 and the prospect of a debut album next year, too.

“We’ve been together just six months and it’s all happening for us – the new year’s going to be big. We can’t wait to get out there! Exciting times,” says Jez.

If you can’t wait to see DownReno at Saltaire in January, or can’t make The Grove in Leeds tomorrow, then you can go to reverbnation.com/ downreno to listen to three of their songs.
