A savage attack by two teenage thugs on a student in a Bingley park was filmed on a mobile phone, a court heard.

Benjamin Spencer had been playing football when he was punched and kicked in Myrtle Park in May.

After being taken to hospital he had to undergo a two-hour operation to treat a deep cut to his left eyebrow which was caused by a kick from a 16-year-old boy.

Prosecutor Heather Gilmore told Bradford Crown Court yesterday that, since the attack, Mr Spencer had suffered headaches and felt frightened to go out in Bingley.

He had also been deeply shocked to find out that the incident had been filmed using a mobile phone and that it had been widely downloaded and seen by others.

The recording was yesterday shown to the Honorary Recorder of Bradford Judge Stephen Gullick as he considered the case of 18-year-old Benjamin Beetham who had admitted a charge of common assault.

Although Beetham, of Brunswick House, Bingley, started the attack on Mr Spencer by punching him several times and kicking him to the body, the court heard that it was the 16-year-old boy who had caused the eyebrow injury by later kicking Mr Spencer in the head.

When he was arrested ten days after the assault Beetham, who had two reprimands for common assault, said he had been drinking and had become angry because of a previous incident allegedly involving Mr Spencer.

Beetham admitted punching Mr Spencer six or seven times before the other boy kicked him in the head.

Judge Gullick decided to adjourn Beetham's sentence until January 19 so that a report could prepared on him by the Probation Service, but he warned the teenager that he was concerned about what appeared to be a pattern of behaviour involving unjustified violence.

He granted Beetham conditional bail, but stressed that all sentencing options would be considered in his case.

Although Beetham and the 16-year-old appeared in the dock together yesterday, the case of the boy, whose identity is protected by law, was remitted back to Bingley Youth Court where he will be sentenced for his part in the attack on January 12.
