A Vietnamese man found locked in a cannabis factory on a Bradford industrial estate has been given a six-month prison sentence.

Police found 930 cannabis plants valued at £350,000 when they raided the industrial building in Hall Lane, East Bowling, in June this year.

Prosecutor Helen Chapman told Bradford Crown Court today that officers executed a warrant under the Misuse of Drugs Act at the two-storey building.

They removed the metal shutters securing the entrance and found three suspects inside, including Hong Van Nguyen. None of them had a key.

Miss Chapman said it was uncomfortably hot inside the building. One room was set up as accommodation, with a bed made from insulation boards, a fridge full of food, an ipad and a laptop.

The other six rooms contained cannabis plants of varying maturity.

Miss Chapman said there were large bags of compost in the property which the defendant said it was his role to fill.

Nguyen, 28, pleaded guilty to assisting an offender.

His barrister, Kate Batty, said: “He could not get out. He had no idea where he was being held and does not speak English.

"He thought that once he had completed the work he would be let out and return to where he came from.”.

A co-defendant, Hoa Toan Van Mai, 31, who has pleaded guilty to three charges of producing cannabis, will be sentenced on November 7.
