The operator of all of the Co-op businesses in Bradford has announced plans for a series of mergers which could see it become one of the biggest supermarket chains in the country.

United Co-operatives has confirmed it is in discussion with the Manchester-based Co-operative group.

The merger would unite the two biggest co-operative societies in the UK.

The move would also put them in direct competition with the so-called "Big Four" supermarket chains, including Bradford-based Morrisons.

A statement released by United Co-operatives said: "The boards of the Co-operative Group and United Co-operatives have agreed to discuss the possibility of a merger between their two societies.

"Talks have commenced and a further statement from the two boards will be issued when they conclude."

No timescale has been put forward for how long the negotiations will last.

The news comes after members of the Leeds Co-operative Society voted en masse to merge with United.

A total of 91 per cent of members polled voted in favour with the board's recommendations that they merge.

The decision now needs to be ratified at a confirmatory meeting in early January, and if approved could see 700 employees and 60 businesses falling under United's control.

Last month, members of the Sheffield Co-operative Society also voted to join United.

United chairman Peter Marks, who was born and lives in Bingley, said: "This is great news for the customers of both societies.

"Leeds is a good, strong society with excellent assets including its employees.

"The proposed merger would result in significant further investment in Co-op stores throughout the area. This would lead to better stores, better ranges and better prices for customers. It would also be good news for staff, with better career opportunities developing throughout the business."

United Co-operatives employs 16,000 people across the country and has a turnover of £2 billion.

As well as running Bradford's Co-op supermarkets, travel agents, pharmacies and funeral directors it also runs the Sunwin Motor Group.
