This time last year Kelly Singh and Robert Greenwood were about to face every parent's worst nightmare.

Their son Cameron was born on December 11, but instead of enjoying the Christmas holiday at home with their new-born and their other two sons Connor, now seven, and Callum, now four, the couple ended up watching their baby battle for his life.

At three weeks old Cameron developed a serious lung infection and had to be admitted to Bradford Royal Infirmary for emergency treatment.

When his condition suddenly deteriorated on New Year's Eve he was transferred to the Queen's Medical Centre, Nottingham, for intensive care as the regional unit in Leeds was full.

It left the couple having to make a daily 160-mile round trip just to see him for a few hours a day, while still caring for Connor and Callum.

The desperate situation lasted until the middle of January when Cameron was deemed well enough by doctors to go home.

Now a year on the situation is very different.

Cameron has now marked his first birthday and will spend this weekend celebrating at home in Allerton Grange Drive, Allerton, with his family. He still needs an inhaler when he gets wheezy and his parents admit they do panic a bit when he develops a temperature through teething, but other than that he is a robust one-year-old.

Mr Greenwood, 37, said: "He is doing really well now.

"I can't believe a year has gone by. We thought he might not make it to this year but now we are all looking forward to Christmas and we will certainly be celebrating this New Year's Eve.

"We get excited about everything that he does because he might not have been here to do it. He can walk around the furniture and is talking, saying things like hello and mama and daddy.

"I am so proud of him."

Mr Greenwood is planning to take Cameron to visit staff at Bradford Royal Infirmary who provided the initial treatment for the viral infection bronchiolitis.

He said: "I want them to see him and thank them for helping him before he went to Nottingham.

"I would like to thank the Nottingham staff as well but it is a bit too far to go in person."
