An historic Yorkshire Army battalion underwent a name change at a laying of the colours parade yesterday.

The 3rd Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment (3 Yorks) has a history that dates back to 1702 and is one of the largest recruiters in the Bradford area.

Yesterday, it was re-numbered to become The 1st Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment (1 Yorks) as part of an Army re-organisation announced by Defence Secretary Philip Hammond in March.

The move sees the regiment’s three battalions merge into two.

The handover happened at Battlesbury Barracks, Warminster, Wiltshire, at an ceremony overseen by Prince Andrew, the Duke of York.

The battalion will remain in Warminster on a high readiness rotation to react to future conflicts.

The Honorary Colours, awarded to 76th of Foot for service in India and held by the Duke of Wellington’s Regiment – the antecedent Regiment to the Yorkshire Regiment – will be shared between the two new battalions of the Yorkshire Regiment on an annual rotation.

The Yorkshire Regiment marched throughout cities and towns in Yorkshire last week exercising the freedom of the county.
