Bingley Show bounced back bigger and better for a crowd-pulling 132nd time.

Torrential rain put a stop to last year’s event at a loss of £50,000 but on Saturday relieved organisers were blessed by dry, albeit cloudy, weather at Myrtle Park.

The crowds were waiting when the gates opened at 9am for what promised to be a day full of family fun and showchairman Leslie Gore said there was "a healthy intake" of earlycomers eager to enjoy all that was on offer from the stalls and marquees to craft and animal classes, terrier racing, showjumping and a chance to get up close to Grand National winner Auroras Encore accompanied by Bingley trainer Sue Smith.

Direct from Glastonbury stomped 8ft Titan, the talking robot, taking in a top view of the heaving crowds which got even bigger into the afternoon with thousands in the park.

The food stands and ale bars were doing a heavy trade as were entrepreneurs plying their produce from chutney to bamboo, luxury garden huts and hair loss aids, to coffins of your choice.

In the handicraft tent the Herd family, of Oxenhope, were celebrating their mouthwatering wins – 16-year-old Rebecca got third prize for her Key Lime Pie in the Dessert For One category while seven-year-old brother Will got a well-done from the judges for his gingerbread and a second prize for his date crunch traybake.

Their mum, Linda, said: “We’ve been eating Key Lime Pie for quite a while now but it’s been worth it!”

In the horticultural tent Bingley Flower Club’s display marking its 50 Glorious Years won a comment from one of the national judges classing its efforts as “a real showstopper” – while on the other side of the marquee monster-size leeks, onions, cauliflowers and cabbages battled it out with each other.

The City of Bradford Brass Band played to the relaxed crowd as they milled about – not so relaxed was Anne Parkinson, of Keighley, waiting for the afternoon dog show to start where she had high hopes for ten-month old Pug Angus who was being entered for the most handsome dog and the dog the judge most wanted to take home!

“He’s only a baby so it’s his first time at a show but we think he’s got what it takes,” she said.

Back in the secretary’s tent, show chairman Leslie Gore said: “Last year was a disaster – the only thing we’d have been able to put on to keep people entertained would’ve been dragon boat racing – we were completely water-logged but this, this is just delightful.”

And he said organisers would only be taking a month’s break before it would be time to start planning all over again for next year’s 133rd show.
