A group behind converting a former tip into a nature haven has been nominated for this year’s Community Stars Awards, recognising unsung heroes.

In the ten years since the start of Burley Village Wildlife Group, more than 70 people have given up an estimated 5,000 hours of their time.

In 2011 the group’s flagship project in Sun Lane became the second place in the Bradford district to be officially designated a Local Nature Reserve (LNR).

It is one of several green areas in the valley now being looked after by Burley Village Wildlife Group.

The tranquil spot, situated between farmland and bordering the railway line, is now thriving with wild flowers, birds, butterflies, dragonflies, small mammals and amphibians.

Chairman of the wildlife group, Peter Riley, said: “What makes me really pleased is that we still get the same numbers of volunteers now as we did when we first started out – and it’s not all retirees.

“Lots comes from the village, the parish council and Wharfedale Naturalist Society, but we get people coming to join us from further afield too – from Otley, Ilkley and Menston.”

Damian Fisher, of Bradford Council’s Shipley area co-ordinator’s office, nominated the wildlife group for the best community group category of the Community Stars campaign which is being organised by the Telegraph & Argus and Bradford Council to see hardworking volunteers rewarded.

Readers are being invited to nominate people who they feel have gone the extra mile. Nominations, which must be received by Monday, September 2, will be whittled down by a panel of judges before a shortlist goes out to a public vote.

Winners will be announced at a ceremony at Bradford City Hall on December 4.
