A golf event in Riddlesden tomorrow will raise money for an epilepsy charity in memory of a Keighley man who died of the condition.
Keen golfer Rene Mancakas died on June 21, 2008, after having a fit in his sleep. He was aged just 36.
Since then his family have organised an annual golf event at Riddlesden Golf Club, where Rene was a member. The money goes to Epilepsy Action and the previous four events have raised a total of £4,500.
His father Joseph said: “He did suffer from epilepsy and had fits before, but on that night we don’t know why his medication didn’t work. We decided to raise money for Epilepsy Action because it helps make people aware of the condition and what needs to be done.”
The first tournament, in 2009, was open to members of St Anne’s Golf Society, but after seeing how popular it had become it was soon opened to all members of Riddlesden Golf Club. At Saturday’s tournament, teams of three will take on the challenge, with a winners’ presentation at the end.
