More than 1,400 people injured in assaults needed inpatient treatment in the district’s hospitals during the last two financial years, latest figures show.

In 2012-13 there were an average of 12.1 assault admissions per 10,000 of the population which accounts for 642 assault inpatient cases at Bradford Royal Infirmary and Airedale Hospital.

In 2011-12 there were 14.5 assault admissions per 10,000 of the population, accounting for 773 assault inpatient cases.

The figures were revealed by the Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC) which said that some regions had more than double the number of assault admissions of others.

For example, the North West had an average of 9.9 assault cases per 10,000 of the population compared to 3.5 cases per 10,000 of the population in South Central.

Some Primary Care Trusts had no assault admissions for both years and many fell below ten cases per 10,000 of the population in that area. The figures relate only to assault victims whose injuries were so serious they required an inpatient admission, with the majority arriving via A&E departments.
