Seventy firefighters are currently battling to get control of a blaze at a supermarket completely consumed by flames.

The Pakeezah Supermarket on Ingleby Road is currently on fire after an 'open blaze' spread to the building.

A command unit containing 15 firefighters has been called in because eight crews are currently tackling the blaze, triggering the unit's attendance.

The buidling is 100 per cent alight and more and more crews have been arriving since the alarm was raised at 1.20pm.

Off duty firefighters have also been called in because of the blaze and its extent.

Four firefighters wearing specialist breathing equipment are at the scene and three large jets are being used.

One crew was initially called out after numerous calls were received by the fire service about the incident, but as the scale of the drama unfolded, more crews were directed there.

It is not known what caused the fire initially but it is understood to have started in the open nearby.

Now the whole building is believed to be alight, with flames coming through the roof.

A cordon has been put in place because of fears the fire could spread to the nearby Morrisons petrol station. Plumes of smoke from the fire can be seen in the city centre.
