The colourful history of Saltaire’s dyeing industry came alive when Titus Salt School students got to grips with local textile heritage this week.

Pupils at the Baildon school worked with the Fabric of Bradford Project, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and based at Hive in Shipley.

They then moved on to work with staff at Roberts Park, Saltaire, and Salts Walks to give pupils an unusual introduction to the history of the local textile dyeing industry.

Blessed with beautiful weather, pupils learned about the history of dyeing by taking part in a heritage walk, planting in the park, and making their own dyes to use with fabrics.

Heather Graham, creative and community projects manager at Titus Salt School, said: “This project is a unique way of introducing our students to their local history, from a very different perspective, and encourages them to take a genuine interest in their local community.

“And a fun, hands-on approach to the textile dyeing process made for a fascinating and enjoyable day.”
