Money destined for good causes was stolen by thieves who broke into a Keighley pub.

The cash for the Alzheimer’s Society and United Response – which helps people with disabilities – was stolen from the Cricketers Arms, in Coney Lane.

Nicola Mitchell, who works at the family-run pub, said: “I think it’s disgusting, and so do our customers.

“It’s especially bad when this was meant for charity.

“The burglars caused us over £300- worth of damage. It’s hard enough as it is trying to make ends meet without having to pay more for things like this.”

The Cricketers was targeted again the following morning, though on this occasion the criminals failed to get in.

Another Keighley pub – the Boltmakers Arms in East Parade – was subjected to a burglary attempt two days later.

Police say three men have been arrested in connection with the offences, and believe the crimes may be linked.

The Cricketers was burgled early in the morning of Saturday, July 6, after intruders forced open a fire door. They took £65 from a United Response charity container and £25 which was meant for the Alzheimer’s Society.

Miss Mitchell, who lives in Long Lee, said the empty site behind the property, which is earmarked for a new shopping development, made it easier for the burglars to access the pub without being seen.

No one was available for comment for the development firm, Stainsby Grange.

Burglars forced their way into the Boltmakers Arms in the early morning of Tuesday, July 9. However, landlord Phil Booth said they fled empty-handed after a security alarm went off.

An Airedale and North Bradford Police spokesman said: “We’re continuing to investigate a break-in and two attempted break-ins at Keighley pubs.

“Keighley Neighbourhood Policing Team are linking a burglary at a pub in Coney Lane on July 6 with an attempted break-in at the same location on July 7, and another attempted break-in at a pub in East Parade on July 9.

“Three men from Keighley aged 36, 37 and 31 have been arrested in connection with all three offences and bailed pending further inquiries.”

Inspector Tony Reed of Keighley NPT, said: “We would remind people to make sure doors and windows are secured during the hot weather at night and ask residents to contact us on 101 or CrimeStoppers on 0800 555111 with any reports about town centre crime.”
