Short films made by Bradford schoolchildren as part of a film literacy project have been shown at the National Media Museum.

The youngsters made the films as part of an ongoing partnership project between Bradford UNESCO City of Film and Bradford Council’s Children’s Services.

“We are working with a number of schools across the Bradford district using film as a tool to help raise attainment levels, particularly in literacy,” said City of Film director David Wilson. “The initiative is supported by the British Film Institute who have helped to train the teachers in special techniques using film.”

Pupils from St Oswalds, Long Lee, Greengates, Sacred Heart, All Saints, Wibsey, St Columbas, Ryecroft, Lapage and Hollingwood schools took part, and youngsters and staff were invited to a special day of screenings at the National Media Museum, with their films shown on the big screen in a professional cinema setting.

The City of Film team has also teamed up with the University of Bradford to fund a PhD research post to research the effectiveness of film literacy in Bradford schools. David Wilson, director of Bradford City of Film, said: “Using film in the classroom in innovative ways is proving to have results. The ongoing role of the National Media Museum as a centre of excellence is crucial .”
