Children of all ages will work together on a film project which will promote the national curriculum and team-building skills.

The project, with the theme of Science and Space, will cover curriculum topics for pupils aged from primary school age up to 18.

Children from Crossley Hall Primary in Thornton Road, Grange Technology College in Haycliffe Lane, Thornton Grammar School in Leaventhorpe Lane and Belle Vue Girls in Thorn Lane and their parents were invited to the WOW academy in Thornton Road.

Students were selected by project co-ordinator Jeanette Dent, who is a science liaison teacher at Thornton Grammar. She said she chose children who had expressed a specific interest in film-making.

After learning to use film-making equipment at the academy - which is a Bradford College project specialising in creative technology - groups of pupils will go out on their own to develop and create a film.

The pupils will regularly meet at the academy to come up with ideas for their films.

And any technological help needed will be provided by academy staff.

Mrs Dent described the chosen teams as a nucleus group who would direct, write and produce the films.

But she said children from other schools could also get involved.

Work produced by schoolchildren at the WOW academy could be used by the teams to incorporate in their films.

And Mrs Dent said despite the varied ages of the team members the Science and Space project would be essential learning for each individual.

She said creative writing and team skills would play a big part of the project.

"Each person will have a go at being the chairperson of their group," she said.

When the project finishes next year Mrs Dent said a premiere of all the films would be held.

"We have already been offered a venue at the Yorkshire Observatory at Harewood, it will be built by the time we need it," she said.

WOW academy manager Hashim Hashim said already more schools were showing an interest in the project.

He said if it was successful the initiative would be rolled out again.

"Hopefully it will be a good experience for everybody involved," he said.
