The world’s fastest coffee powered car stopped off in Bingley yesterday to wake up shoppers in time for Fairtrade Fortnight.
The Co-operative’s Coffee Car, nicknamed the “Bean Machine,” pulled into the 5-Rise shopping centre for an hour, offering free ethically-sourced coffee to shoppers. It was one of 37 stores the car stopped at on a trip around the UK to promote the Fairtrade movement.
Run on coffee chaff pellets, waste from coffee production, it recently set the Guinness world land speed record for a car of its kind, reaching 65.5 mph.
Caron Metcalfe, manager of the Bingley Five Rise Co-operative, said: “It’s vital that we educate people about the Fairtrade movement and the power it has to change lives. I’m sure the eye-catching tour of our coffee car will spark conversations around the subject.”
The annual Fairtrade Fortnight, which started yesterday, encourages shoppers and suppliers to change their habits for the benefit of farmers in the Third World. This year marks the tenth anniversary of the Co-Op switching to 100 per cent fairtrade coffee.
