A requiem mass was held for Canon Denis Tangney, who spent his early priesthood serving Windhill’s Catholic community.
Born in 1922, Canon Tangney studied for the priesthood in Dublin before moving to Leeds and Batley in the 1940s.
In 1950 he moved to St Anthony’s in Windhill, where he was an assistant priest until 1953. He moved between parishes in Yorkshire until he became parish priest of St Theresa’s in Crossgates, serving there for 31 years.
He was made an honorary canon of the Cathedral Chapter in 1980.
Canon Tangney died on February 15 at Mount St Joseph’s in Leeds. His funeral was on Sunday and the requiem mass was held yesterday at St Theresa’s.
