Bingley Harrier Les Haynes, who turned 70 last month, won individual and team gold representing England in the British and Irish Masters at Queens University in Belfast.

The Thackley-based runner was first over-70 by 25 seconds, winning his 6km cross-country race in 25min 06secs.

He was also part of the winning team, which included fellow Bingley Harrier Fred Gibbs.

Haynes and Gibbs, along with John Smithurst, were also part of the Harriers over-65s team that won at the British Masters event in Derby.

Elsewhere, many local runners competed on the flat and fast Abbey Dash course last weekend, but others took on some of the calendar’s toughest races.

A total of 112 runners tackled the Wadsworth Half Trog, which saw Tim Black, of Calder Valley, triumph in 1hr 15min 55sec, while Holmfirth’s Helen Berry won the women’s race in 1:25:47.

Pudsey and Bramley saw two fantastic finishes, with Harry Dalby pipping Alex Jones to fifth by just two seconds, coming in at 1:23:41.

Four Keighley and Craven runners were led home by David Copping, who took 29th place in 1:31:27, and Jayne Butterworth, of Skipton AC, finished fourth in the women’s race in 1:39:41.

Elsewhere, Ian Nixon, of Pudsey and Bramley, claimed a fantastic second spot in the punishing 17-mile Tour of Pendle, featuring 4,833 ft of ascent, while Wharfedale Harrier Sam Watson finished fourth.

Wharfedale were also the first women’s team and second men’s team.

Ilkley had seven runners make the trip to Barley, with Jann Smith (3hr 04min) taking third in the women’s race and Will Buckden coming home in 3hr 06min.

Even further afield, Ilkley’s Dougie (1hr 18min) and Judith Scarfe (1hr 31min) competed in the Wimborne ten-mile road race in Dorset.

And Idle AC members were also on their travels, with two fantastic times in the Luton Marathon for Sean Duffey, who notched a personal best of 3:10:37, and Leon Winder, not far behind in 3:25 exactly.

Pudsey Pacers’ Andrew and Catherine Smithurst were in Dublin to compete in the very first park run to be held in Ireland. Andrew finished in 25:24, while Catherine came in at 28:08.

A little closer to home, Spen AC’s Gerard Skippins ran a strong Barnsley 10K, finishing 21st overall in a time of 36:52, which also placed him fourth in the men’s over-35 category.
