Police have reiterated warnings that lives could be put at risk after yobs again hurled stones at passenger trains from a railway bridge in Bradford.

British Transport Police have tackled a number of incidents where missiles, including a television, have been thrown at passing trains from the Dalcross Grove footbridge at West Bowling.

But the latest attacks involved stones being thrown from a railway bridge off Daleburn Road at Oakenshaw.

A glass door panel was damaged on one train, while a stone smashed the window of another train carriage and landed inside where passengers were sitting. Fortunately, nobody was injured.

The attacks took place at around 6pm on Saturday in the area of Daleburn Road industrial estate. The services affected were the 1629 Wakefield Westgate to Leeds and the 1643 Selby to Wakefield Westgate.

Sergeant Peter Shaw, of BTP, said, “Luckily there were no reported injuries to anyone on board, but this could have resulted in a passenger or member of rail staff being seriously injured. Both trains had to be taken out of service to be repaired.

“This type of behaviour is completely unacceptable and I would urge anyone who saw any suspicious activity in the area on Saturday evening, or who has any information about the incident, to contact police.”

Officers searched the area following the incident, but the culprits had fled.

Sergeant Matt Crawford pointed out jail sentences of up to two years could be imposed for endangering the safety of rail passengers and staff.

He added: “This was reckless behaviour and people could easily have been injured. It is dangerous and it is only a matter of time before something disastrous does happen as a result.”

Anyone with information about the latest attack is asked to contact British Transport Police on 0800 405040, quoting incident number 403 of 10/11/2012.

Information can also be passed to Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
