An army smoke grenade was used in a bonfire night attack on a new hairdressers in Bradford when it was hurled through the smashed window of the salon.

Firefighters attended the incident at DB Hair and Beauty in St Enoch’s Road, Wibsey, at 10pm on Monday, and had to wear breathing apparatus due to the risk of toxic fumes from the bomb or chemicals in the premises.

Shocked owner Denise Harland and her staff spent early yesterday clearing up.

“Whoever it was tried to smash the big plate front window first, but it was too tough so they broke a pane of glass in the door and threw in a sort of army bomb which went off and filled the place with smoke,” she said.

“People in the nearby fish and chip shop called the fire brigade, who were there in minutes. It’s a single-storey building, so luckily there was no-one in it at the time.

“I got a call almost immediately and was there minutes after the firemen. They were brilliant. They went in and sorted it all out.”

Mrs Harland said she and her staff had managed to rid the salon of soot and debris.

“Obviously it was very worrying, but now it’s business as usual. We’ve had masses of phone calls and messages of support from our customers, who’ve been wonderful.”

Mrs Harland has only just moved her 12-year-old business to St Enoch’s Road from the High Street.

“It’s not what you need just six months down the road from moving in, but we’ve cleaned everything up and everybody's smiling again,” she said.

West Yorkshire police confirmed officers had been called to the scene and recovered a smoke canister which was being sent for tests as part of an investigation into the attack.

The incident was one of several across the city on bonfire night.

An officer at Fairweather Green station suffered minor injuries after being hit with a brick as yobs attacked a crew damping down a bonfire near the junction of Spencer Road and Harlow Road, Lidget Green, at 7pm.

The same crew also attended a house fire and two cars on fire.

Fireworks pushed through the letterbox caused a blaze at an empty terraced property in Leyburn Street, Manningham, at 10.30pm, which was contained before it could spread to adjoining homes. At 9.27pm a Skoda Fabia was set alight in Milford Place, Heaton, after a concrete slab was hurled though its back window, followed by fireworks. And about 400 yards away in Silk Street, Manningham, a Vauxhall Astra was found engulfed in flames at 1.45am.
