SIR - Great news that Eric Morecambe's son has found a lost Morecambe and Wise episode from 1970 that was aired on Christmas Day.

I love Morecambe and Wise but at the same time, can't help being fascinated by the divide they represent in comedy. While they are rightly revered as comic geniuses by many, their humour is lost on some, perhaps more the young. My friends find the grapefruit kitchen routine about as funny as Phil Tufnell on a Question of Sport, however well choreographed it was.

After recovering from heart attack in 1979, Morecambe was asked if he's going to relax and enjoy himself for a bit. He quipped with his customary laser beam delivery: "If I get a bit, I'll enjoy it". The nation fell apart. It was a Fools and Horses, fall through door in pub moment, but purely ad-libbed.

The pompous Ernie Wise was of course a perfect foil with his classic line: "I used to be conceited, but now I'm perfect". While Eric went for the embarrassing but loveable father-in-law routine. And the bed scenes didn't even raise an eyebrow in this age of innocence. Later however, tastes became more sophisticated.
