MORE than 30 years ago, Bradford artist Lynne Dobson exhibited work with her father, who had inspired her to take up a paintbrush from a young age.

Now Lynne has paid tribute to her late father, Geoffrey Greenwood, in a new exhibition at Shipley Library, featuring the work of three generations of her family.

“My father was an artist and spent many hours entertaining me with drawings,” says Lynne.

“In later years he encouraged me to enter art competitions. We shared a few local exhibitions, both painting local landscapes - me using acrylics, him watercolours, and one was at Shipley Library. So I saw this as a fitting venue to showcase the family`s work in his memory, along with a selection of his watercolour paintings.

“Sadly, my father passed away in 1994. He would have loved the fact that many members of our family are creative and talented.”

The exhibition, called Family Matters, opened this week and features a range of art styles, from an etching to paintings, pastel and pencil drawings, a tattoo sketch and an abstract from Lynne’s two-year-old granddaughter, Lola, who lives in San Francisco.

“Lola is a very enthusiastic young artist, she knows exactly what she wants to paint and in which colours - mainly red, her favourite colour,” says Lynne. “She will, hopefully, carry on the artistic family trait for the future.

“Other family members taking part are my brother, Philip, a retired art teacher, my sons Kyle, Joel (Jack), Ryan and Tom, Kyle’s daughters Mia and Lola, my late father-in-law, Bob, and my late father, Geoffrey.”

A retired art teacher, Lynne holds regular exhibitions - earlier this year she displayed paintings of local landmarks such as Cartwright Hall, Sunbridgewells and the Alhambra in her My Town exhibition. She has painted murals in schools, and painted an ‘outdoor classroom’ for Dixons Marchbank Primary School, using children’s sketches of Bradford.

“Art has been a passion from an early age,” she says. “My work ranges from abstract, traditional, semi-abstract, pencil drawings to collage.”

* Family Matters runs at Shipley Library until Monday, December 3. Many of the paintings are for sale.
