Introduction

I work at Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust as a Medical Secretary.  I have been working for the NHS for over 20 years.  I started as an Administrator in 2000 then became a Medical Secretary in 2007. I really enjoy my job and over the years I completed many courses and gained a lot of experience.

What is your apprenticeship in and why did you choose this sector?

Business Administrator, Level 3 Standard.

I chose this sector as this course was relevant to my current job role.

Also by completing this course I will be able to contribute to the improvement of our service which will be beneficial to patient care and service development.

What does your average working week look like?

I work Monday to Friday between 8.00 am to 4.00 pm.  My job is very interesting, enjoyable and I am dealing with a variety of secretarial and administrative duties.  My work role is to provide admin support to Clinicians on a daily basis. I work closely with Secretaries, Consultants, Management, Team Coordinators and other professionals.

I am also part of Bradford Project Search Team as a Mentor which helps young people with learning disabilities gain the skills to secure jobs in different work placements.

I am currently doing extra shifts as a Volunteer to support the hospital during the pandemic.

Why did you opt to do an apprenticeship rather than A Levels or a B Tech ?

I chose to do an apprenticeship as I felt completing this course would be beneficial to my current job role.

I will have a better understanding of our service which can lead to new ideas and improvements within our department.

What is the most rewarding thing about your apprenticeship?

Learning new skills every day and to be able to put these new skills into practice which will contribute to service improvements within our department.

If one of your friends was thinking about doing an apprenticeship what advise would you give them?

Go for it! Enjoy every moment and make sure you have plenty of time set aside for your course work.

Once you are qualified what are you plans for your future career?

I am very happy in my current job role but I feel that learning new skills, gaining new qualifications will open the door for many job opportunities in the future.
