In 2018 I decided to return back into education to train to be a dental nurse. At 40 years old this was a daunting prospect but one of the best decisions I have ever made. My dentist gave me Lisa Roche’s email as he highly recommended her as a tutor and Bradford College. I emailed her direct and she put things into motion the day after. I came back off holiday and she rang me with an offer of an interview. I attended and was offered the apprenticeship and started the following day. I have happily been there ever since.

What is your apprenticeship in and why did you choose it?

My apprenticeship is in dental nursing and I chode this as I have always had a passion for the health and wellbeing of others

What does you average working week look like?

My working week is 12 hour days, 8am – 8pm, Weds, Thurs, Fri as this meet the practices needs.

Why did you opt to do an apprenticeship rather than A levels or a B Tech?

I feel with an apprenticeship you get hands on experience and time in college with your tutors to complete the written assignments and exams

What is the most rewarding thing about your apprenticeship?

The most rewarding thing about my apprenticeship is having not only the practice experience of learning, but knowing that academically I’m still able to sit and pass exams.

If one of your friends was thinking about doing an apprenticeship what advice would you give them?

I would highly recommend an apprenticeship to anyone who likes to learn both practically and academically as this offers both and gives so much satisfaction to learn new skills while doing the job.

Once you have qualified what are your plans for you future career?

My plans for the future are to keep adding to my skills set and stay in education with Bradford college to further my knowledge and understanding of dental nursing.
