Highways England
ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 - SECTION 14
THE A1(M) MOTORWAY (WASHINGTON SERVICES TO JUNCTION 61)
(TEMPORARY RESTRICTION AND PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC)
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that Highways
England Company Limited has made an Order
on the A1(M) Motorway, in County Durham, to
enable resurfacing and drainage improvement
works to be carried out in safety.
The works are expected to start at 8pm on
Sunday 13 June 2021 for 8 weeks or until
completed.
The effect of the Order will be, at times during the works, between 8pm and 6am, to close the A1 (M) southbound:
(i) carriageway from the exit slip road at Junction 63 (Blind Lane) to the entry slip road at Junction 61, a distance of 17812 metres;

(ii) southbound exit slip road at Junction 61;

(iii) southbound exit and entry slip roads at Junction 62 (Carrville); and

(iv) southbound entry slip road at Junction 63. During the closures suitably signed alternative routes will be available at all times.

It will be necessary to impose, for 24 hours a day, for the duration of the works, a temporary 50mph speed restriction on the A1 (M) southbound carriageway from the entry slip road at Washington Services to the entry slip road at Junction 61 (Bowburn), a distance of 20163 metres.
The works will also require lane closures, during which times the hardshoulder will be used for traffic adjacent to the A1 (M) southbound carriageway from the exit slip road at Junction 62 to the entry slip road at Junction 61, a distance of 8500 metres. Traffic management will be in force 24 hours a day and traffic signs will indicate the extent of the restrictions (which will not apply to emergency service vehicles or special forces vehicles) and prohibitions (which will not apply to emergency service vehicles or vehicles being used in connection with the said works or for winter maintenance or traffic officer purposes). The Order comes into force on 12 June 2021 and has a maximum duration of eighteen months.
