Families and pensioners braved the cold weather to turn out for St George’s Day events at City Park in Bradford today.

In the first public event since the park’s official opening last month, visitors saw fire eaters and stunts where people walked over a bed of nails when celebrations started at 11am.

The Lions Part Theatre enacted the tale of St George and the Dragon – a 500 year old ballad telling the legend behind the celebrations – to the delight of visitors which included a trio of pensioners.

Doreen Luciw, 82, said that she attended the event every year with her friends Margaret Spencer and Veronica Quantrill.

“We are here and having fun and we support everything that goes on in Bradford,” said Mrs Luciw.

Activities will go on until 4pm.
