York Light Opera Company, is one of the leading amateur musical societies in the City of York and indeed the North of England.
We have been presenting shows for many years, in fact 2013 will be our sixtieth anniversary year.
Our shows have ranged from operetta such as The Merry Widow and The Pirates of Penzance through the post-war American classics,
South Pacific and Carousel up to the more modern presentation of Thoroughly Modern Millie, Jesus Christ Superstar, Beauty and the Beast
and Little Shop of Horrors.
Most recently, a sell-out production of The Sound of Music, which included a memorable ‘Sing Along Night’.
Productions are staged for two weeks every March at York’s top venue, The Theatre Royal, with matinees on both Saturdays.
We engage a professional director and orchestra.
The Company also present a Summer Show, usually in June, for one week often at The Joseph Rowntree Theatre, but venues may vary.
When not rehearsing or performing we have a very busy social calender, with theatre visits, restaurant trips, parties and the highlight of our year the Annual Dinner Dance at York Racecourse.
The Company expects a high level of commitment from it’s members in order to maintain and improve the professional standards and reputation built up over many years.
