Owner John Allison, Purveyor of quality fine foods was born a Farmer's son from Appleby in Westmorland.
John left school at 15 years old and by 18 became a butchers manager for what was then known as Fine Fare, at the time this was the largest supermarket group going.
By the age of 23 John became his own boss, opening his butcher's shop here in Ferryhill and has now being established 33 years.
Allison's have won numerous awards for pork pies, 5 times winner in Darlington & District and most recently became Supreme Champions for the Northern Council of Butchers Association at Durham City and also York in 2004/5.
John also has many awards for the vast array of various homemade sausages he has available including lamb & mint...Beef & ale... Mediteranean...Pork & Black pudding...Durham...and last but not least Westmorland, named after his farm home in Appleby.
To sample these sausages is a delight to the tastebuds. The Westmorland has been created from a recipe John remembers from his mother and he has lovingly re-created it so his customers can enjoy his mothers own recipe.
John also does a great deal for charity, and has 7 times ran the Great North Run.
He gives away bones and ask's for donations to the charity box in return and he holds a charity "Duck Race" each year which proves to be really popular as a host of plastic ducks with numbers stuck on their rear ends are launched into the river, the winner being the first one pulled out some miles further down stream
For all Allison's Butchers has a great sense of fun and does lots of work for charity the most important thing for john and his team are his products, all local grown and farmed you can be assured anything you buy from Allisons Butchers will not only taste great but will be of the finest quality.
