CULTURE Secretary Sajid Javid has urged the people of the district to light a candle to commemorate the start of World War One.

He's also keen for people to find out more about the local events being held to mark the centenary.

Mr Javid said: "If you want to learn more about Bradford’s contribution – both on the front and at home – a good place to start is the Peace Museum UK ‘Snapshot on War’ on August 4 and Land Fit for Heroes Tour on August 15.

"The Bradford Industrial Museum is showing JB Priestley: Soldier, Painter, Writer as well as Bradford’s War: 1914-1918.

"And nine Bradford secondary schools have also signed up to a national Government scheme that’s sending students on battlefield tours so they can better understand the war."

Mr Javid said he hoped that between 10pm and 11pm today people would join him and millions of other people across Bradford and around the UK in lighting a candle.

He said: "It’s a small way to remember a massive conflict, and to reflect on the moment a century ago when the British Empire entered the war as 'the lamps went out all over Europe'.
