Telegraph & Argus Monday, July 21, 1969:
Man’s first walk on the moon, dreamed of for centuries, had lasted a whole 2 hours and 14 seconds. America’s astronauts, Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin, then returned safely back to their exploration module Eagle, resting after their great adventure and awaiting instructions for their lift-off. Beamed around the world, millions watched the television spectacular clearly showing the two spacemen loping light-footed across the clinging powdery surface of the moon. Radio contact was restored with Houston about 20 minutes after they re-entered Eagle. The epic event was celebrated with everything from topless showgirls pouring champagne to dips in the fountain pools of Trafalgar Square.
